Keep L

Asterhue for iOS

Write to asterhue.app@gmail.com with anything at all. For a bug report, your device model and iOS version help a great deal.

Using Asterhue

Turning the wheel

Drag the outer ring and the whole set of points turns together, holding its shape. It is the night sky turning around the pole star: the relationships between your colours never break. The arrows either side step the wheel round one notch at a time.

Adding, moving and removing points

Tap inside the wheel to add a point, up to eight. Press and hold a point, then drag, to move it. Tap a point to open its editor, where you can also delete it.

Raw and Keep L

These are the two rotation modes in Settings. Raw turns the hue and leaves everything else alone. Keep L corrects as it turns so the colours hold the same apparent lightness. When a palette mixes colours that read very differently in brightness — yellow against blue, say — Keep L is the easier one to work with.

Snapping

With snapping on, rotation settles onto twelve (or twenty-four) even positions. It is what you want when the palette depends on an exact angle, as a complementary or triadic scheme does.

The eyedropper

Lifts a colour out of a photo. Picked colours go into a group called "Picked" and stay independent of your other points. Each sample averages the 5×5 pixels around the point you touched, so photo noise does not throw the reading off.

Questions

Where are my saved palettes?

The middle tab is your library. You can search it by name and change how it is sorted.

Will my palettes move to a new phone?

Not in this version. Palettes live on the device, and there is no iCloud sync yet. Export anything you would hate to lose, as an image or as text.

What does the free version include?

The wheel, editing, the eyedropper, saving and the library are free in full. Exporting differs.

I bought premium but the app does not know / I changed device

Use "Restore purchases" in the Settings tab, and check that you are signed in to the App Store with the same Apple ID you bought with. It is a one-time purchase, so there is nothing further to pay.

I made a mistake

Undo and redo are at the top left. A rotation or a slider drag is recorded as one step when you lift your finger, so undo never walks back through it frame by frame.

I cannot tell what the icons mean

Turn on "Show labels" in Settings and every control gains a written description. The first-run walkthrough can be replayed from Settings at any time.

There is too much animation

Turn on iOS's Reduce Motion. Movement drops to a minimum and the tilt-driven highlight stops entirely. Low Power Mode does the same.

Reporting a bug

Send the steps to reproduce it, your device model and your iOS version to asterhue.app@gmail.com. If the problem is in an exported image, attaching that image makes it much quicker to find.
